I’ve gotta say, there is absolutely nothing more “German Romantic” than a tenor screaming “mein HeeeEEEEEERZ MEIN HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERZ” until he modulates to a major key and then immediately switching back to minor when he realizes he’s not QUITE done talking about death yet.
I’ve been listening Winterreise nonstop the past couple of days, and Ian Bostridge’s voice is utterly brilliant and lovely. His was the first full Winterreise I heard, and now that I met him in person (surreal, i know) I see why it never fails to chill me to the bone.
