Because I’m the incredibly boring kind of person who finds political negotiations incredibly fascinating, I find it fair to say that so long as you don’t expect the senior partner to get their own way all the time in a coalition, and so long as you understand that some policies are better than none, then you can claim to be sensitive to the political realities and complexities of the world of party politics. For the first time in years, there is actually an opportunity to shift the political conversation in this country. Unfortunately, not everyone is seeing the incumbent party for the sham they are, and the tactic of the opposition is ‘when a possible Coalition polling low, keep quiet and just let it happen’, which stops them from taking advantage of this opportunity to really hammer that home. It’s understandable I guess, it’s a smart tactic considering the voter bases. But in the long run, they’re just throwing away an opportunity to destabilize the single party rule. The truth is, the only sense in which they can do better on their own is the sense in which every parent thinks their kids are smarter and better looking than everyone else's kids: they may believe it in their hearts, but it doesn't necessarily stand up to objective, unsentimental analysis. Still, what an exciting time to be here! I can already imagine myself and you-know-who years from now, sitting around a campfire, eating s'mores and talking about the stories of what we were doing when the Coalition was being formed, like it was some mystical event. | ||
