When I accepted this position as a professor at a liberal-arts college, I didn't realize how much time I would devote to solving complex mathematical problems.

Question: If I am teaching three courses this semester, each for a total of two-and-a-half classroom hours a week, and have to spend two to three hours of preparation for each hour in the classroom, in addition to all of the grading; if I have to spend 10 hours a week in the office, much of which time I devote to administrative and service responsibilities; if I can set aside the 8-11 p.m. block four days a week for working time; and if I want to allow myself at least one hour each day - just one, that's all I need - to relax and watch re-runs of The Simpsons on late-night television before I collapse in the evening; if all these apply, how many hours does that leave me for my own writing and research?

Answer: It depends. How much of my weekend am I willing to sacrifice?

Extra Credit Question: How many hours will I have for my writing next semester, when I am teaching four courses instead of three?

All I want is an article out of one chapter of my dissertation but, sadly, the very idea of looking at it again and start making revisions for a journal article seems to be enough to induce vomiting. And I'm really frustrated by my inability to write while I fall back upon what I always do when confronted by a problem I can't easily resolve: I write about it.
