I finally met my upstairs neighbor yesterday, after the umpteenth faculty orientation, we had dinner together at a nice Thai restaurant along with a very interesting conversation. He's also a visiting prof. in theatre department, who just moved here from NYC, a true Francophile, and has recently been to Japan to master this very specific and physically demanding acting technique - so his life sounded much more eventful/interesting than mine. But for some reason, he thought I was the interesting one and he asked a lot of questions about my research, upbringing or politics in general. Then we discovered that our apartments' layouts were completely different -so I went to his place after dinner, and then he came to see my place, and we had tea and talked until 10:30 or so. And it was so much fun! Our new plan now is to clean up that space in the backyard or use my balcony for wine and cheese parties -and invite Eileen too this time, the other neighbor I haven't met yet.
Ah! Am I finally starting to make friends here, outside the department? Maybe? Maybe it'll be okay after all, you know, I'll be sad to leave this place in a year?
Here's to the hope that everything is gonna be alright in the end.
