"y'all survive on 3 sodas a day but when a hurricane comes, y'all turn into a fish and need 40 cases of water." I may or may not have 40 cases of water... and yes my brother probably still doesn't approve this level of prep/hoarding, but right now it's looking like we may actually dodge a hurricane sized bullet. After Irma passed through the Caribbean, it defied the computer projections and moved west, greatly reducing the risk for us. Sure it touched us even before the eye hit the Keys, but it's mostly overcast right now, no rain yet. While it's a bit early to tell if there's any damage to my FL family (because it’s supposed to hit Central Florida tonight, but as a Cat 1, which is nothing to anyone used to hurricanes) and there may not be power for quite a while, at least the Carolinas may come out of this shitstorm unscathed - I guess we'll see in a couple of days. In the meantime, there's no hurricane day at school, so I'm supposed to be at work at 8am tomorrow. Ugh. Speaking of...Hurricanes, nuclear threats, wildfires, earthquake and now a possible tsunami? You know, when I assigned that state-building exercise to my students (ironically due this week), I thought it would be a nice thought experiment - I didn't realize it would reflect the reality we're living in (#impendingdoom) and they may actually have to rebuild the political institutions from scratch one day..well, sooner than expected? It's almost like we should treat our planet better... | ||
