"Authoritarianism is not just a box in a typology of 'regime types.' All kinds of regimes evoke reactions in their societies. But certainly the kind of authoritarian government that is based on disingenuous contempt for rule-based institutions produces a lack of trust and skepticism about sincerity, and an expectation of hypocrisy that pervades public behavior. Well after the regime that created that culture is gone, little in public life is taken at face value, all policy proposals are assumed to have a hidden agenda, and any compromise is a sign of weakness."

It’s sad. It’s short-sighted. And it’s another way our countries are killing themselves by following ideological madness to its suicidal conclusion.
