Staying in student housing brings back so many memories! Even though I’m glad not to be sharing an apartment suite, sleeping in a twin bed, or maneuvering around a too-tiny, no-space bathroom any more, I gotta say I’m still a little nostalgic for when I was a freshman and everything was shiny and new. The horizon is not quite as shiny and exciting as it was the summer before freshman year of college, but perhaps in a way it’s better. In the past, “College” was forever a concept to me. This thing far off in the future that only big kids go to, and despite a series of diplomas on my wall, sometimes I still feel like that 6-year-old girl who knows of “college” only as far as it was the reason my babysitter moved away. It’s an even stranger concept that it’s now behind me.

My wistful, nostalgic, it-all-works-out-in-the-end rambling aside, everything in VA has been great so far. We stepped on Spider turf for the workshop this weekend – as a visitor, no less – but it still felt like home. And here's the best part: U of R had some crazy alum who donated a huge amount of money (about a million dollars?) to create a "dessert endowment", to provide an incredible array of desserts in the dining halls. Now there is an entire island dedicated to at least 10 different types of desserts that change nearly every meal. It is amazing. Thankfully, someone (provost? colleagues at the home institution? organizing committee? U of R?) has loved us enough to give us a taste of this dessert endowment. Now if that’s not love, I don’t know what is!
